Atlanta United Defeats Toronto FC 2-0

Earns Third Straight Shutout

Atlanta, GaAtlanta United looked like the 2018 MLS Champions again.  After a rough start to the season, United has bounced back with its third straight win, defeating Toronto FC 2-0.

Tito Villalba scored the first goal of the match in the 17’.  After several corner kicks and one free kick, United struck pay dirt when Josef Martinez hit a cross that Villalba was able to guide in to goal.

The lead would grow to 2-0 in the 67’ of the second half.  Julian Gressel scorched a goal past the Toronto goal keeper for his second goal of the season.  Martinez was credited with his second assist of the night.

The 2-0 lead proved to be enough for the victory.  United looked aggressive offensively and played a fast paced game with many transition opportunities.  Although sloppy at times in the first half, the defense was solid later in the game to earn the shutout.

Toronto FC entered the game tied for second in all of MLS with 21 total goals.  But for the first time this year, it was shutout.  United’s goalkeeper, Brad Guzan, recorded his third straight clean sheet and fourth of the season.

United looks to maintain form on Sunday, May 12th when it hosts Orlando City at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Overall, Atlanta dominated time of possession 72% to 28% but was unable to secure a victory.  The team looked tired.  It was the seventh match in 25 days.  The team has a week off before playing Columbus Crew on March 30.  Columbus is currently tied for first place in the Eastern Conference.

Atlanta United Disappoints in Home Opener

ATLANTA, GA – In only its second match ever, FC Cincinnati tallied its first points in its MLS history in a 1-1 tie with Atlanta United.

Atlanta scored early on a goal by 2018 league MVP Josef Martinez, his first of the year.  The goal was setup by a beautiful assist from Julian Gressel in the 5’.

From there, Atlanta controlled play by owning time of possession 66.4% to 33.6%.  FC was content sitting back and clogging the lanes.  However, FC converted a breakaway late in the match to knot the score.  It was Roland Lamah’s first goal of the season on an assist from Kenny Saief.

It was a disappointing result for the reigning MLS champions against an expansion club.  The United have gotten off to a slow start under new coach Frank de Boer.

Gressel continued his stellar play in the early part of the season.  He earned both Man of the Match and the Golden Spike award.

Greg Garza, part of Atlanta’s championship team last year, made his first appearance for his new team FC Cincinnati in the 71’.  He received a rousing welcome from the United faithful.

Announced attendance was 70,382.  The next home match is Wednesday, March 13 against Monterrey as part of the CONCACAF Champions League.  United’s next MLS match is a home affair on Sunday, March 17th against Philadelphia Union.

Nets 27th Goal of Season to Propel Atlanta to 3-1 Win

Atlanta, GA – In a complete team effort, Atlanta United earned a decisive 3-1 victory over Columbus Crew in MLS action on Sunday at Mercedes-Benz.  Atlanta, coming off a two-week layoff, dominated offensively and defensively.

It was another record setting day for Atlanta’s Josef Martinez.  The Venezuelan striker tied two MLS records.  In the first half, he scored in the 31’ to give United the early 1-0 lead.  The goal was his 27th, which tied him for the MLS single season record.  He has nine more regular season matches to claim sole possession of that record.  He also tied the record for most consecutive matches scoring at 8.

Columbus tied the match soon after halftime.  Gyasi Zardes scored his 15th goal in 50’ minute.  He moved in to a tie for second place for most goals on the season.

Atlanta finally took the lead for good in the 76’.  Tito Villalba dribbled the length of the field and somehow managed to get the shot past two defenders and the goalkeeper.  An assist was credited to Julian Gressel.

Miguel Almiron put the nail in the proverbial coffin in the 82’.

He shot a laser from outside the box that went past the outstretched hands of the goalkeeper.  This ended a lengthy scoring drought for the Paraguayan midfielder.  Both Martinez and Villalba were credited with an assist on the play.

Atlanta next returns to action on Friday, August 24 when it faces Orlando City.

Martinez Notches Two More Goals

Atlanta, GA – Toronto FC scored a late goal in extra time to get a 2-2 result on Sunday at Mercedes-Benz.  Atlanta United dominated for most of the match.  Atlanta missed a golden opportunity to secure three more points in its quest for the Supporters’ Shield.

The other big story is Josef Martinez’s march towards the single season goals record in MLS.  He added two more goals in Sunday’s match, giving him 26 for the season.  He is one shy of tying the record set by Roy Lassiter in 1996, Chris Wondolowski in 2012, and Bradley Wright-Phillips in 2014.

Martinez’s first goal was on a penalty kick in the 53’.  He was fouled by Toronto’s goalkeeper, Alexander Bono.  This was Martinez’s fifth goal of the season by way of penalty kick.  He later added a goal on a header in the 67’ in what appeared to be the game winner.

Atlanta got off to a slow start once again.  Toronto’s Sebastian Giovinco scored a goal in the first minute of first half stoppage time.  The score remained 1-0 heading in to the halftime break.

Notes…Toronto had only two shots on target, but both resulted in goals…Atlanta held the advantage in time of possession 55% to 45%…Toronto’s Chris Mavinga was given a red card for getting in to an altercation after the final whistle…Ezequiel Barco missed his third straight match due to violating team rules…Atlanta has a two week break, with its next game at home against Columbus Crew on Sunday, August 19th…Attendance was 45,191.

Martinez Sets MLS Record for Hat Tricks

ATLANTA, GA – The Five Stripes from Atlanta put on a show Saturday afternoon at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.  After falling behind from an early DC United goal, Atlanta tallied three goals to claim the victory.  All three goals were scored by Josef Martinez, who leads all MLS goal scorers with 22.

Martinez has been short of amazing this year.

His 22 goals are nine more than any other player in the league.  He is averaging a goal per match, which is a historic pace in MLS.  For his career, which spans less than two years, Martinez has recorded six hat tricks, a record for which he stands alone in MLS history.

Attendance was 45,087.  Atlanta next plays at Montreal on July 28.

Notes….Recent transfer Wayne Rooney made his first start for DC United…Andrew Carleton, a local product from Powder Springs, GA, made his first MLS start of the season for Atlanta, logging 65 minutes of match action…Eric Remedi, the recent transfer from Argentina, made his first appearance for Atlanta in the 76’…Ezequiel Barco did not start for the first time in the last 15 matches.  According to Atlanta’s manager Gerardo Martino, Barco violated team rules and will be held out for next week’s match, too.

Atlanta United Dominates Orlando City 4-0

Atlanta, GA – Atlanta United wasted little time getting on the scoreboard Saturday night at Mercedes-Benz.  Just three minutes in to the match, Josef Martinez scored his league leading 15th goal of the season.  From then on, it was all Atlanta United.

Not to be outdone, Miguel Almiron scored two goals, both in the second half.  The remaining goal was credited to Ezequiel Barco.  It was Barco’s fourth goal of the season.

The defense was once again stellar.  Brad Guzan, Mr Clean Sheet, recorded another shutout.  He had a lot of help from the back line.  He was also aided by a Mikey Ambrose kick save in front of the goal during the first half.  That play aided in him getting named “Man of the Match.”

United remained unbeaten against Orlando City during the two year southern rivalry.  Orlando has now gone three matches without scoring a goal, dropping their record to 6-10-1.  Atlanta improves to 11-3-4 on the season and increased their league lead in points.  Attendance was 71,932.

Atlanta travels to Dallas on Wednesday night for a July 4th clash with FC Dallas.  FC Dallas is tied for first place in the Western Conference.

Atlanta United vs Philadelphia Union

Five Stripes Win 3-1

Martinez Records Hat Trick

ATLANTA, GA – The Five Stripes got back to its winning ways Saturday night at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.  Atlanta United won a disjointed match 3-1 against a tenacious Philadelphia Union team.

Josef Martinez recorded the hat trick.  He scored on a cross from Miguel Almiron and added two penalty kicks.  The hat trick was the fifth of his career, tying the Major League Soccer career record.  He accomplished the feat in only 30 games, making him the fastest to reach that level.

The key sequence of the match happened in the 19th minute.  Martinez was fouled in the box.  The referee awarded Atlanta United a penalty kick.  Philadelphia protested the call and delayed the game, resulting in a second yellow card for Alejandro Bedoya.

Then Philadelphia’s Haris Medunjanin completely lost his cool.  He was given back to back yellow cards for dissension.  By rule, both players were “red card” ejected for getting two yellow cards in the same match.

Atlanta played the remainder of the match with a two-man advantage.  Statistically Atlanta dominated time of possession, shots, and shots on goals.  In fact, Atlanta United had an incredible thirty shots on game for the game.

Notes…Martinez assumed sole possession of the MLS scoring lead.  His 12 goals on the season are now three ahead of second place…The Mercedes-Benz Stadium roof was open for the first time this year…Attendance was 45,140…United next plays Charleston Battery on Wednesday as part of the US Open cup series.

Atlanta United Vaults into First Place With a 4-1 Victory

Atlanta, GA – For 70 minutes, the Montreal defense bottled up the potent Atlanta United attack.  Atlanta then unleashed its potent attack, scoring four goals to close out the game and win the match 4-1.

Atlanta dominated the first half time of possession (77%) but found itself trailing early.  Montreal’s Saphir Taider scored on a header in the 13’.

Coach Martino subbed in Tito Villalba to start the second half.  That seemed to ignite the offense.  Almiron scored his first goal on a penalty kick in the 70’ to tie the match 1-1.

Kevin Kratz then scored the game winner in the 78’ on a free kick.  He had just entered the match in the 74’.  He would later add a second goal on another free kick in overtime.  He was awarded Man of the Match for his two goals on two shots performance.

Almiron added a second goal in the 84’ on a beautiful assist by Josef Martinez.  With that goal, Almiron tied Martinez for the league lead in goals at six.  Almiron was awarded the Golden Spike Award for the match.

Except for the early slip up, United’s defense was once again stellar.  Atlanta won its second straight match, improving to 6-1-1.  With the win, Atlanta takes over first place in the Eastern Conference and leads the league in points.

Attendance for the game was 45,039.
