WASHINGTON — McDonald’s is tapping into nostalgia with the return of a fan-favorite Happy Meal toy from the late 1980s and early 1990s.
The fast-food giant it is bringing back its iconic Changeables Happy Meal toys. They started rolling out at restaurants around the country Tuesday.
The toys, which first debuted in 1987, will be available for a limited time at participating restaurants nationwide.
“We’re bringing back the iconic Changeables Happy Meal – inviting a new generation of fans to discover the nostalgic experience that made it a fan-favorite,” McDonald’s said in an emailed statement. “The beloved toys that first stole fans’ hearts in the late ’80s and early ’90s will return to restaurants for a limited time, giving kids and grownups alike the chance to get one of 16 Changeables that transform into classic McDonald’s icons.”
Often compared to Transformers, Changeables are toys that resemble McDonald’s menu items but can be reconfigured into figures such as robots or dinosaurs.
The original Changeables Happy Meal programs were released in 1987, 1989 and 1990 and were a favorite for kids in those decades, according to Guillaume Huin, McDonald’s senior marketing director.
Huin said in a Jan. 22 post on X that the revived collection will feature updated versions of both the robot and dinosaur designs from the original releases. He added that Changeables were “by far” the most requested Happy Meal program across social media platforms and through customer service channels.
The new lineup includes 16 different characters, each with its own name and personality, Huin said. McDonald’s also teased the return on Instagram and on its Happy Meal website with trading card-style profiles of the characters.
The revival marks the latest example of McDonald’s leaning into nostalgia as brands increasingly look to reconnect with longtime fans while introducing classic products to younger customers. In recent years, the company has brought back “Boo Buckets” around Halloween and has tried to entice customers with lower prices more akin to those seen in past decades.
