Atlanta United vs Columbus SC
Atlanta United Suffer Disappointing Loss to Columbus
Dwyer Scores Goal
Atlanta Latinos Magazine – Atlanta United entered the match having not lost at home this season, while Columbus Crew entered the match having not won on the road. Despite these streaks, Columbus managed to scrape out a 2-1 victory Saturday night at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
Columbus wasted no time getting the first score. Columbus defender Jonathan Mensah headed in a corner kick from Pedro Santos. It was Mensah’s first goal of the season.
Columbus added a second goal right before halftime. Erik Hurtado received a long pass from Derrick Etienne Jr. Hurtado was able to beat the United defender in a one-on-one battle and drilled the shot past the United goalkeeper.
Atlanta finally got on the scoreboard in the 92’. Dom Dwyer attempted a miraculous bicycle goal kick that found the back of the net. It was Dwyer’s third goal of the season. The assist was credited to Alan Franco.
Atlanta continues to struggle on defense, especially defending set pieces. Atlanta lost yet another center back to injury in the early minutes of the game. Ronald Hernandez injured his knee and was replaced by Mikey Ambrose in the sixth minute of the game. Goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth has yet to record a shutout in six games started this year. He has only 10 saves in 21 shot attempts.
United received two red cards in the match. Manager Gonzalez Pineda was carded and ejected in the 92’ minute after the Dwyer goal. Thiago Almada received a red card for making contact with the referee after the match. Both will miss the next MLS match against Inter Miami CF in three weeks.
