Nets 27th Goal of Season to Propel Atlanta to 3-1 Win

Atlanta, GA – In a complete team effort, Atlanta United earned a decisive 3-1 victory over Columbus Crew in MLS action on Sunday at Mercedes-Benz.  Atlanta, coming off a two-week layoff, dominated offensively and defensively.

It was another record setting day for Atlanta’s Josef Martinez.  The Venezuelan striker tied two MLS records.  In the first half, he scored in the 31’ to give United the early 1-0 lead.  The goal was his 27th, which tied him for the MLS single season record.  He has nine more regular season matches to claim sole possession of that record.  He also tied the record for most consecutive matches scoring at 8.

Columbus tied the match soon after halftime.  Gyasi Zardes scored his 15th goal in 50’ minute.  He moved in to a tie for second place for most goals on the season.

Atlanta finally took the lead for good in the 76’.  Tito Villalba dribbled the length of the field and somehow managed to get the shot past two defenders and the goalkeeper.  An assist was credited to Julian Gressel.

Miguel Almiron put the nail in the proverbial coffin in the 82’.

He shot a laser from outside the box that went past the outstretched hands of the goalkeeper.  This ended a lengthy scoring drought for the Paraguayan midfielder.  Both Martinez and Villalba were credited with an assist on the play.

Atlanta next returns to action on Friday, August 24 when it faces Orlando City.

Notes…attendance was 45,309.  Ezequiel Barco returned to action after a three-match team suspension.  He entered the match in the 75’…Josef Martinez was named Man of the Match.

Atlanta United Settles for 2-2 Tie

Martinez Notches Two More Goals

Atlanta, GA – Toronto FC scored a late goal in extra time to get a 2-2 result on Sunday at Mercedes-Benz.  Atlanta United dominated for most of the match.  Atlanta missed a golden opportunity to secure three more points in its quest for the Supporters’ Shield.

The other big story is Josef Martinez’s march towards the single season goals record in MLS.  He added two more goals in Sunday’s match, giving him 26 for the season.  He is one shy of tying the record set by Roy Lassiter in 1996, Chris Wondolowski in 2012, and Bradley Wright-Phillips in 2014.

Martinez’s first goal was on a penalty kick in the 53’.  He was fouled by Toronto’s goalkeeper, Alexander Bono.  This was Martinez’s fifth goal of the season by way of penalty kick.  He later added a goal on a header in the 67’ in what appeared to be the game winner.

Atlanta got off to a slow start once again.  Toronto’s Sebastian Giovinco scored a goal in the first minute of first half stoppage time.  The score remained 1-0 heading in to the halftime break.

Notes…Toronto had only two shots on target, but both resulted in goals…Atlanta held the advantage in time of possession 55% to 45%…Toronto’s Chris Mavinga was given a red card for getting in to an altercation after the final whistle…Ezequiel Barco missed his third straight match due to violating team rules…Atlanta has a two week break, with its next game at home against Columbus Crew on Sunday, August 19th…Attendance was 45,191.

Atlanta United Dominates Orlando City 4-0

Atlanta, GA – Atlanta United wasted little time getting on the scoreboard Saturday night at Mercedes-Benz.  Just three minutes in to the match, Josef Martinez scored his league leading 15th goal of the season.  From then on, it was all Atlanta United.

Not to be outdone, Miguel Almiron scored two goals, both in the second half.  The remaining goal was credited to Ezequiel Barco.  It was Barco’s fourth goal of the season.

The defense was once again stellar.  Brad Guzan, Mr Clean Sheet, recorded another shutout.  He had a lot of help from the back line.  He was also aided by a Mikey Ambrose kick save in front of the goal during the first half.  That play aided in him getting named “Man of the Match.”

United remained unbeaten against Orlando City during the two year southern rivalry.  Orlando has now gone three matches without scoring a goal, dropping their record to 6-10-1.  Atlanta improves to 11-3-4 on the season and increased their league lead in points.  Attendance was 71,932.

Atlanta travels to Dallas on Wednesday night for a July 4th clash with FC Dallas.  FC Dallas is tied for first place in the Western Conference.

Atlanta United vs Philadelphia Union

Five Stripes Win 3-1

Martinez Records Hat Trick

ATLANTA, GA – The Five Stripes got back to its winning ways Saturday night at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.  Atlanta United won a disjointed match 3-1 against a tenacious Philadelphia Union team.

Josef Martinez recorded the hat trick.  He scored on a cross from Miguel Almiron and added two penalty kicks.  The hat trick was the fifth of his career, tying the Major League Soccer career record.  He accomplished the feat in only 30 games, making him the fastest to reach that level.

The key sequence of the match happened in the 19th minute.  Martinez was fouled in the box.  The referee awarded Atlanta United a penalty kick.  Philadelphia protested the call and delayed the game, resulting in a second yellow card for Alejandro Bedoya.

Then Philadelphia’s Haris Medunjanin completely lost his cool.  He was given back to back yellow cards for dissension.  By rule, both players were “red card” ejected for getting two yellow cards in the same match.

Atlanta played the remainder of the match with a two-man advantage.  Statistically Atlanta dominated time of possession, shots, and shots on goals.  In fact, Atlanta United had an incredible thirty shots on game for the game.

Notes…Martinez assumed sole possession of the MLS scoring lead.  His 12 goals on the season are now three ahead of second place…The Mercedes-Benz Stadium roof was open for the first time this year…Attendance was 45,140…United next plays Charleston Battery on Wednesday as part of the US Open cup series.
