CHICAGO, Illinois — Civil Rights icon Rev. Jesse Jackson has died, according to a statement from the family.
Jackson was recently hospitalized in November 2025.
He had been managing a neurodegenerative condition for more than a decade, according to his organization Rainbow PUSH Coalition.
In 2017, Rev. Jackson, 84, spoke openly about his original diagnosis of Parkinson’s. According to a CNN report, he said he took the diagnosis as “a signal that I must make lifestyle changes and dedicate myself to physical therapy in hopes of slowing the disease’s progression.”
The family announced on Rev. Jackson’s Instagram account that he had passed away “peacefully on Tuesday morning, surrounded by his family,” along with this statement below:
“Our father was a servant leader — not only to our family, but to the oppressed, the voiceless, and the overlooked around the world,” said the Jackson family in a statement. “We shared him with the world, and in return, the world became part of our extended family. His unwavering belief in justice, equality, and love uplifted millions, and we ask you to honor his memory by continuing the fight for the values he lived by.”
Rev. Jackson founded the Rainbow Coalition in 1971. He announced his retirement as president of the organization in 2023. Rev. Frederick Douglass Haynes III succeeded him as president.
