The platform is launching new default settings aimed at protecting teens, with age checks required for access to certain features.
WASHINGTON — Discord is rolling out enhanced teen safety features globally next month, including a new default experience designed to be age-appropriate for all users.
Beginning with a phased rollout in early March, Discord said all new and existing users worldwide will have a “teen-appropriate experience” by default.
Users may be required to complete an age-verification process to change certain settings or access sensitive content, including age-restricted channels, servers, app commands and select message requests.
“Nowhere is our safety work more important than when it comes to teen users,” Savannah Badalich, Discord’s head of product policy, said in a statement. “Rolling out teen-by-default settings globally builds on Discord’s existing safety architecture, giving teens strong protections while allowing verified adults flexibility.”
Discord said users can verify their age using facial age estimation or by submitting an identification document to vendor partners, with additional options planned in the future. The company also plans to use an “age inference model” that runs in the background to help determine whether an account belongs to an adult without always requiring verification.
Discord said video selfies used for facial age estimation never leave a user’s device. The company also said identity documents submitted to vendors are deleted quickly, in most cases immediately after age confirmation, and that a user’s verification status will not be visible to other users.
Under the new default settings, only age-assured adults will be able to unblur sensitive content, access age-gated spaces, modify message request inbox settings, and speak on stage in servers. Users will also see warning prompts for friend requests from people they may not know.
Discord said it will also begin recruiting for a new Teen Council made up of 10 to 12 teens ages 13 to 17. The goal is for the council to provide the platform with insight into what teens need to feel safe and supported online. Applications are open through May 1, 2026.
