Bowe and Jackson were among the stars who raced in what became a record-breaking competition.
WASHINGTON — Speed skating at the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics continued Monday with the women’s 1,000 meters race, featuring two of Team USA’s top stars.
World record holder Brittany Bowe and reigning Olympic 500m champion Erin Jackson both competed in the event. The Americans were in the mix early, with Jackson briefly holding the lead before the Dutch skaters took over in the final pairings.
Dutch skater Jutta Leerdam won gold with a time of 1 minute, 12.31 seconds, setting a new Olympic record. Her teammate Femke Kok took silver in 1:12.59, having set the Olympic record before Leerdam skated immediately after and broke it again with her winning time.
Japan’s Miho Takagi, the reigning gold medalist, won bronze in 1:13.95.
Bowe finished fourth in 1:14.55, narrowly missing the podium in what is expected to be her final Olympics. Erin Jackson placed sixth in 1:15.00.
Jackson, the reigning Olympic champion in the 500m, jumped into the lead early in the 11th pairing, skating 1:15.00 to move ahead of Dutch skater Suzanne Schulting. Jackson finished strong through the final stretch, but was later bumped down as the top contenders took the ice.

Bowe, 37, is the world record holder in the 1000m and won bronze in the event at the 2022 Olympics. She entered the 2026 Games planning to retire after her fourth Olympic appearance.
Leerdam, 27, is also scheduled to compete in the women’s 500 meters next Sunday. She has 12 world championship medals, including six gold, with two world titles in the 1000m.
