Sallie Kapps of Loris marked her 107th birthday alongside five other Horry County residents over 100 at a rare gathering honoring several centenarians.

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — When a South Carolina woman celebrated her 107th birthday in Myrtle Beach on Thursday, she did so with five other guests who know, first-hand, how special that day was.

The South Carolina Department on Aging said Sallie Kapps of Loris celebrated her major milestone with five other people who were over 100 years old. When Kapps gathered with 105-year-old Reba Williard, 103-year-old Irene Wagner, 101-year-old Carl Halberg, 101-year-old Clara J. Hurley and 101-year-old Chanelle McKee for a photo, officials said they believed it was a particularly rare moment — even more so since they are all residents of Horry County.

The event put on by the Horry County Council on Aging may have been on Kapps’ birthday, but it was a chance to honor all six. Each of the centenarians received a certificate from the S.C. Department on Aging to recognize their accomplishments.

Three others who could not attend, 103-year-old Joanne Funney, 102-year-old Isabel Tomb and 101-year-old Wayne K. Clary were also recognized at the event, which the state agency’s director attended.

“Recognizing and honoring six Centenarians in one setting is a phenomenal occasion to celebrate. The life events they have survived are a true testament to perseverance,” Director Connie Munn said in a provided statement.
