WASHINGTON — With New Year’s Eve coming up on Wednesday, Dec. 31, the countdown to 2026 is well underway.

While New Year’s Day is a federal holiday, meaning some businesses and services are closed, it may not be immediately obvious if the mail will run as usual on the day prior or if banks will be open on Wednesday.

Is the post office open on New Year’s Eve?

The United States Postal Service will have normal operations on Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2025.

New Year’s Eve is not one of the holidays observed by USPS, so mail delivery will still happen. Local post office locations will be open, but remember to check for specific hours.

However, post offices will be closed on New Year’s Day. Mail delivery will also pause on Thursday, Jan. 1, 2026. Additionally, mail won’t be picked up on Thursday from blue collection boxes – so plan ahead.

Are banks open on New Year’s Eve?
