CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Another year has just been added to Penny Butler’s 10-plus decades, as she celebrates her 106th birthday!
“It’s an amazing number for me as well. I never thought that I would, but it’s just another year,” the birthday girl said on Jan. 4, 2026.
Born Millicent Butler — her nickname “Penny” was coined by her younger sister decades ago – Penny has lived through many generations, has worked in the executive space, and says her secret to a fruitfil life is simple:
“Be involved. That’s my secret. If you’re going to be here, there are so many activities that you can do, and it’s foolish not to be involved,” she said.
Butler says she loves to dance, take part in activities where she lives, and spend time with family—she says being involved is a part of her day-to-day routine.
“I go to the art class, and I play bridge, and I go to the exercise,” she said.
Butler is the mother of three children, six living grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren—the youngest of which is just 2 months old.
Her 106th Birthday wish? For her family to follow in her footsteps.
“I am the mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother of wonderful children, and they, too, have always been involved and are still involved.”
And she hopes her neighbors also heed her advice.
