The pet food vending machine, housed off Edgewood Ave. in Atlanta, offers a free resource to families who may otherwise have to surrender their pets
When families face financial or housing instability, difficult decisions often follow, including whether they can afford to keep a pet.
Two Atlanta-based organizations are now partnering to provide support to help keep families and their pets together.
Goodr’s Community Market in Edgewood, known for providing accessible and affordable food, now has a new resource behind the register: a free pet food vending machine for dogs and cats.
“Our nonprofit is all about low-cost and accessible pet care and keeping families together,” said Ebony Richardson, who leads Atlanta Dog Mom and is spearheading the vending machine initiative.
Atlanta Dog Mom works with seniors, low-income families, and others facing financial stress to help them avoid surrendering their pets.
Richardson says job loss and rising costs are common reasons families reach out.
“We’ve had people reach out to me and say, ‘Hey, I have two dogs, and I just got laid off,'” Richardson said. “And I don’t know how long I’m going to be able to keep the dogs.”
With animal shelters often overwhelmed and families financially constrained, Richardson believes the vending machine provides a practical solution to scale up in Atlanta while offering flexibility. Families can access free cat and dog food as needed.
“You can grab whatever you need. We’ll have cat and dog food here,” Richardson said.
Atlanta Dog Mom partnered with Goodr, a company that uses technology and logistics to combat food insecurity. The pet food vending machine aligns with the goal of removing barriers to basic needs.
“It takes a village, honestly,” Richardson said.
The vending machine allows families to pick up free pet food without scheduling appointments or navigating transportation challenges. The technology tracks inventory in real time and alerts the nonprofit when the machine needs restocking.
Richardson said the collaboration reflects a broader effort to address rising pet care costs through community support.
“I think if we really just come together as a community, the resources will be bigger than the sum of their parts,” she shared.
The new vending machine is located at Goodr’s Community Market in Edgewood. Atlanta Dog Mom is seeking donations to help keep it stocked.
