Early preparation can make all the difference during winter emergencies.
SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. — As colder weather approaches, shoppers are steadily heading to local hardware stores to stock up on emergency supplies.
While generators remain one of the most sought-after items, store managers say there are several other essentials families should have on hand to stay safe and warm this weekend. Retailers warn that the biggest rush typically happens once severe weather hits or power outages begin.
Their advice: don’t wait.
At the Lowe’s in Sandy Springs, Store Manager Conrad Garner says customers have already cleared out much of the generator inventory.
“What’s left of them was full this morning,” Garner said. “We sold all of these, plus about 15 more we had on the main aisle, and people are still calling about them.”
Along with generators, shoppers are also purchasing flashlights, space heaters, batteries, and glow sticks in preparation for potential power outages. Garner emphasizes the importance of testing generators beforehand and using them safely.
“You always want to think about generators and testing them prior to it getting cold and icy,” he said. “When you’re using them, make sure they’re outside and away from windows. Also, have extra batteries, flashlights, or anything else you can safely use if the power goes out.”
Cold weather can also cause costly damage to homes if pipes are left unprotected. Experts recommend disconnecting outdoor hoses and using faucet covers to prevent freezing.
“You want to look at pipe insulation and pipe tape,” Garner explained. “Cover your pipes, especially the ones outside that are unattended, where the weather can really take hold and cause them to burst.”
For outdoor plants that can’t be brought inside, frost blankets can help protect them from freezing temperatures. Garner says now is the best time to prepare, while stores are still receiving new inventory.
“Start getting the things that you need right now,” he said. “Don’t wait until the final days leading up to the event. Even if we’re out of something, check back or leave your phone number so we can contact you when items come in.”
Extra Tips to Stay Prepared
- Use tarps to cover outdoor furniture and grills
- If faucet covers aren’t available, plastic bags or newspapers can work as a temporary solution
- Consider using a power inverter to charge personal electronics during an outage
