An East Tennessee couple is headed to the Olympics.
Regina and Mike McCormick from Morristown left for Italy Thursday morning with friends from Canada. It’s a trip they’ve been planning for almost a year.
Mike attended the Olympics 20 years ago with his father when the games were held in Torino, Italy in 2006. This time around, he’s looking forward to watching hockey. Mike is a Toronto native, so he’ll be cheering for Canada, while Regina roots for Team USA.
“I think USA and Canada are evenly matched,” Mike said. “USA has probably got the edge in goaltending, and I think we probably have the edge in defense, and I’m really hoping the two will meet in the gold medal game. For the women, it should almost certainly be Canada and the U.S. They’ve got a great rivalry.”
“It’s gonna be a dream-like trip,” Regina smiled. “And he’s planned it so well. I’m just so excited.”
Mike is also looking forward to visiting the official pin trading center, a dedicated space for collectors from around the world to gather.
“We’ve got Canada pins, USA pins, we’re hoping to have some Tennessee pins on order and hoping to have, maybe some Morristown pins that we will exchange with people.”
This year, the city of Milan introduced a unique “city adventure” dynamic designed to get fans exploring.
The McCormicks will be documenting their travels on social media.
