February has long been considered the snowiest month, but experts say that depends on where you live.
WASHINGTON, D.C., USA — Residents of Earth will soon be treated to their next bright night skies thanks to the coming full moon.
The first full moon of February will take place on Feb. 1, according to NASA’s daily moon guide. Moon viewers will be able to make out numerous features on the celestial body’s surface with a telescope, binoculars, or even with their naked eyes. Even though it will appear full for a few days, it will peak the night of Feb. 1.
The celestial event is called the “Snow Moon” by some, which dates back to a long tradition of European writers naming full moons by what they claimed were Native American or First Nations moon names. The English term “Snow Moon” first originated in Massachusetts writer Jonathan Carver’s 1778 book “Travels through the Interior parts of North America,” where he claimed unspecified Native American tribes named the full moon event as such because that’s the month when the most snow falls.
Is the “Snow Moon” name correct for February? That largely depends on where you live, according to the Weather Channel. More areas have experienced their snowiest months in January, with areas that have their snowiest month in February being located on the northern East Coast and the Midwest.
But, February is the month that’s had the heaviest snow events recently, according to Weather Channel meteorologists. The month has experienced the most major winter storms since 2013 at 66, with January coming in second at 54.
“February is to winter storms as September is to hurricane season,” Meteorologist Jonathan Erdman said. “When February’s typically strong, active jet stream rides atop that cold air, you can generate bunches of winter storms in the span of 1 to 2 weeks.”
Around 1.2 million square miles of the United States, nearly five times the size of Texas, is covered with snow during an average February, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The largest February snow cover ever recorded was in 1978, when around 64% of the contiguous United States was covered in snow.
