Aldi plans 180 new stores in 2026, will enter 2 new states

BATAVIA, Ill. — Low-cost grocery store chain Aldi said on Monday it plans to open 180 new locations this year as part of a $9 billion expansion, including its first locations in Colorado and Maine.

The Illinois-based company said in a news release that it plans to operate nearly 2,800 stores nationwide by the end of 2026, with a goal of 3,200 stores by the end of 2028.

The company also intends to open three new distribution centers in the next three years in Baldwin, Fla. (2027), Goodyear, Ariz. (2028) and Aurora, Colo. (2029). The company also has plans to expand its distribution center in Haines City, Fla.

“These strategic investments are all about making sure customers can continue to count on us for the quality, affordable groceries and enjoyable shopping experience they love,” said Aldi U.S. CEO Atty McGrath in the news release.

The company, based in Batavia, Ill., just west of Chicago, said it is investing more than $9 billion into its national expansion over five years.

Aldi said in its release that it will focus on these key markets in 2026:

Aldi said it has a five-year plan to enter Colorado and will open 50 stores in two years in the Denver and Colorado Springs markets.

The company said it will open its first store in the state this year, in Portland.

Phoenix will get 10 new stores this year, with plans for a total of 40 new stores in the market by the end of 2030.

Aldi debuted in the Las Vegas area last year and said it will double its current store count there by 2030.

The company said it plans to convert nearly 80 Southeastern Grocer locations to Aldi this year. Aldi acquired Southeastern Grocers, which includes Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket, in 2024 and plans to convert more than 200 stores in total by the end of 2027.
