America 250 license plates roll out in multiple states with designs that celebrate patriotism

WASHINGTON — Americans are starting to celebrate the country’s 250th birthday in a very visible way: on their cars.

Several states have rolled out special “America 250” license plates ahead of the nation’s semiquincentennial this year. The designs, many featuring red, white and blue themes, were created in partnership with state motor vehicle agencies and local America 250 organizations.

Several states started releasing the commemorative plates as early as 2024, including Louisiana. 

Others have taken a more unique approach to their designs.

In Georgia, the winning plate design was selected through a statewide contest led by the Department of Education. The design was created by middle school student Eden Pethel, who incorporated key Revolutionary War sites across the state.

“The red stars on the design represent the following Georgia Revolutionary War sites from north to south,” Pethel said in a statement, referencing locations including the Battle of Kettle Creek and the Battles of Savannah.

The plates vary in appearance by state but generally highlight patriotic imagery tied to the upcoming anniversary of the nation’s founding.

Drivers interested in purchasing an America 250 plate can do so through their state’s department of motor vehicles or equivalent agency. Costs will vary depending on the state. 

Some, like Florida, offer the plate at standard registration cost. Others charge an additional specialty fee, often with proceeds supporting local America 250 initiatives.

In Massachusetts, the license plates have become massively popular, with a lottery required to get a low-number plate. It’s now the most requested specialty plate the state has ever offered.

Availability also differs by state. Some programs are limited-time offerings, with Michigan’s set to end in December.
