Apple to use Google’s Gemini to power new Siri AI features

WASHINGTON — Apple is teaming up with Google to power its artificial intelligence features, including a major Siri upgrade expected later this year.

The multi-year partnership will rely on Google’s Gemini models and cloud technology to support Apple’s future foundational AI models, according to a joint statement obtained by CNBC. The companies said the models will continue to run on Apple devices and Apple’s private cloud compute.

“After careful evaluation, we determined that Google’s technology provides the most capable foundation for Apple Foundation Models and we’re excited about the innovative new experiences it will unlock for our users,” the companies said in the statement.

The partnership follows reports last year that Apple was in early talks with Google about using Gemini to power a new version of Siri. Bloomberg previously reported Apple planned to pay about $1 billion a year to use Google’s AI technology.

Apple previously delayed its planned upgrade of a more advanced AI-powered Siri until 2026, despite promoting the feature in advertising. The company said it needed more time to roll out the new capabilities.

Apple currently works with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT into Siri and Apple Intelligence. It’s unclear how the Google partnership will affect that relationship, though Apple told CNBC it is not making changes to its agreement with OpenAI.

The move comes as Google continues to gain momentum in the artificial intelligence space. The company introduced its Gemini 3 model late last year and has been expanding Gemini across its products, including shopping tools, Gmail features and search capabilities.
