With travel demand on the roads ramping up, AAA says drivers can still save a little bit of money with some patience and common sense.
ATLANTA — Gas prices across Georgia have surged nearly a dollar per gallon over the past month, driven in part by global tensions following the start of the Iran war in late February. Even with Georgia’s suspension of the state gas tax, drivers are still feeling the pinch — just as spring break travel accelerates.
AAA says rising demand from spring break trips, graduations, and early summer vacations is adding pressure at the pump. So what can drivers do to make a tank of gas last longer?
Lighten the load before you go
The first step, AAA spokesperson Montrae Waiters said, is also one of the simplest. “Get the junk out of your trunk,” Waiters said. “The heavier your car is, the harder it works, and the more fuel you’re going to burn.” Extra weight forces engines to work harder, reducing fuel efficiency — especially on longer road trips.
Plan fuel stops ahead of time
For trips that require multiple fill-ups, Waiters recommends mapping out gas stops before hitting the road. “Drivers need to have a plan prior to traveling and try to find the cheapest gas prices in the areas they’re going through,” she explained.
AAA’s mobile app can help drivers compare gas prices along their route. Prices are typically higher in major metro areas, and drivers may save money by fueling up outside big cities. Some gas stations also offer discounts through fuel rewards programs or by paying with cash.
Slow down to save gas
Speed matters when it comes to fuel economy. “Fuel economy decreases rapidly at speeds above 50 miles per hour,” Waiters said.
Driving faster burns more gas, so sticking close to the speed limit can help keep costs down — and improve safety, too.
One Georgia motorist, Wilbur Sican, said he’s willing to try just about anything to save. “Gas prices — they’re really high right now,” Sican said. “So, I would try anything.”
Sican did wonder how this would work in practice, as so many people drive so fast.
Avoid traffic jams when possible
AAA also suggests leaving earlier in the morning to avoid peak travel times, when stop-and-go traffic causes vehicles to idle and waste fuel.
Whenever possible, Waiters encourages drivers to carpool and remain patient behind the wheel.
Frustrated or aggressive driving not only increases crash risk, but AAA also says it almost always leads to using more gas.
