ATLANTA — Outside the Fernbank Science Center, curiosity is flowing. Kids check out space rocks, chemicals, plants, reptiles, and amphibians as the Atlanta Science Festival is back in town. Meisa Salaita is one of the engineers behind the festival that brings people, creatures, and critters together in the same space.

“Two weeks long, it’s an amazing celebration of science,” Salaita said. “We have events, 140 of them all across the Metro region. Science creates a sense of curiosity and wonder, and it just is inspiring. Every question you ask about the world inspires you to ask more questions.”

The two-week-long festival is a celebration of science that uses partnerships with 80 entities to produce programs, events, and festivities throughout Metro Atlanta.

Popping the senses and learning more about life drew Sean Fankhauser to the Fernbank Science Center, which has partnered with the festival since it began in 2013.

“You make the science yours,” Fankhauser said. “You can combine any number of different disciplines. Whatever inspires you, that can be your trajectory in life, whether it’s your career or just your hobby.”

While Salaita wondered about the future of funding science, she never questioned the bedrock of society.

“Science continues to inspire and create wonder,” Salaita said. “That’ll never change. Science continues to improve our daily lives. It’s the support of it from upper levels that is under question right now.”

Salaita said Atlanta defined science as the city in the forest, a learning and technological hub in the South and the home of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“In a world where sometimes science is being devalued right now, I think people in Atlanta are showing they value it,” Salaita said. “Those people are doing research that’s making our lives better and better, and I think we really need to value it. The Science Festival really brings that forward.”

The Fernbank Science Center will host the Science is Lit event on Friday, March 20, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Then, the festival culminates with the exploration expo, a giant science party in Piedmont Park on Saturday, March 21, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. More info on the Atlanta Science Festival can be found here.
