Atlanta Wins 4-2
United’s Offense Shines
Atlanta Latinos Magazine – The drought is over. After eight matches without a win, Atlanta United finally notched its first victory since late March, defeating visiting Cincinnati 4-2 at Mercedes Benz Stadium on Sunday night.
Atlanta took an early lead, scoring two goals in the first 20 minutes. Derrick Williams headed home the first goal on a corner kick in the 15’. That was followed up in the 20’ by a goal from Jay Fortune, who easily converted a goal after a stellar pass from Saba Lobjanidze.
After halftime, Cincinnati cut the lead in half. Former Atlanta defender Miles Robinson headed home a corner kick in the 48’.
Atlanta responded in the 66’, as Bartosz Slisz recorded his first goal of the season to make the score 3-1. However, Cincinnati quickly answered. In the 70’, Gerardo Valenzuela earned his third goal of the season to tighten the match to 3-2.
From there Atlanta’s defense held up. Atlanta’s Jamal Thiare tacked on a last-minute insurance goal to make the final tally 4-2.
For Atlanta, it was a much-needed victory. Atlanta came in to the match second to last in the Eastern Conference. With the win, it moved up two spots to 12th place.
It will be a quick turnaround for Atlanta, as it hosts Orlando on Wednesday night, May 28.
Notes…Cincinnati remains in second place in the Eastern Conference, having won seven of its nine previous matches before tonight…Alexey Miranchuk recorded his first two assists of the season…for both Jay Fortune and Derrick Williams, it was their first goal of the season and only second of their career… Atlanta had an expected goal stat of 4.29…attendance was announced as 40,919.
