Atlanta United vs Seattle Sounders
Atlanta United Settles for 1-1 Tie
Disappointing Day at the Benz
ATLANTA, GA – Atlanta United settled for a 1-1 tie against the Seattle Sounders Sunday afternoon at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Atlanta entered the game tied for first place in MLS this season, while Seattle was mired in tenth place in the Western conference. The one point earned by Atlanta on Sunday propels them in to first place by itself.
The match was ugly from start to finish. Seattle played a rugged, defensive style that kept Atlanta off balance for most of the first half. Right before intermission, Seattle earned a penalty kick thanks to a controversial handball in the box. Nicolas Lodeiro converted the penalty kick, marking his second goal of the season.
Trailing 1-0 at halftime, Atlanta came out inspired in the second half. Three minutes in to the second half, Josef Martinez scored on a header with an assist from Julian Gressel. The goal was Martinez’s league leading 19th goal. It was Gressel’s 8th assist of the year.
From then on, neither team was able to score. Atlanta controlled possession and the match for the remainder of the day but missed several golden opportunities to claim victory.
Attendance was 72,243, which set the MLS record. Atlanta returns to action for another home match against DC United on Saturday, July 21.
