WASHINGTON — The next chapter of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is beginning to take shape, with a new teaser trailer confirming the return of a familiar face.
Marvel Studios released the first teaser trailer for Avengers: Doomsday Tuesday, and it reveals that Chris Evans is officially back in the MCU, reprising his role as Steve Rogers.
The brief teaser shows Steve riding a motorcycle to a quiet farmhouse as a piano version of the Avengers theme plays.
While there’s no dialogue, the footage flashes moments of Steve wearing a wedding band and holding a newborn baby, suggesting he has built a family since audiences last saw him in Avengers: Endgame. In the final moments, Steve opens a storage crate and pulls out his Captain America suit, pausing as he looks at it before the screen cuts to black.
Text then appears, announcing, “Steve Rogers will return in Avengers: Doomsday.”
Directors Joe Russo and Anthony Russo addressed the reveal in an Instagram post, writing, “The character that changed our lives. The story that brought us all here together. It was always going to come back to this.”
In 2024, Evans told Esquire he was “happily retired” from playing Captain America, shutting down rumors that he would be returning.
And in 2023, he told GQ, “I’ll never say never, just because it was such a wonderful experience.”
“But I’m also very precious with it. It’s something that I am very proud of. And like I said, sometimes I can’t believe it even happened,” he continued. “And I wouldn’t want the black eye if it felt like a cash grab or if it didn’t live up to expectations or if it just felt like it wasn’t connected to that original thing. So, no time soon.”
Fans last saw Steve Rogers at the end of Avengers: Endgame in 2019, when he passed the shield to Sam Wilson, played by Anthony Mackie, after choosing to live out his life with Peggy Carter in the past. That film broke box office records, becoming the highest-grossing film at the time, earning nearly $2.8 billion.
Avengers: Doomsday is set to hit theaters on Dec. 18, 2026.
