BRANDON, Fla. — A baby born at just 22 weeks was discharged from HCA Florida Brandon Hospital on Wednesday after spending more than eight months in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).
The hospital said John Delancey III — affectionately known to staff as Johnboy, JJ, Johnny, Lil John and even Big John — weighed just 1 pound and 0.2 ounces when he came into the world on June 6, 2025.
But, he’s a true fighter.
John grew from a “micropremie” to a thriving 17-pound, 3.5 ounce big boy with the help of the dedicated nurses, physicians and therapists who had been by his side for 257 days.
“It takes extraordinary teamwork to care for a baby born this early, and John reminded us every day why this work matters,” said Dr. Kiran Dwarakanath, NICU medical director, in a statement. “Micropremies face incredible challenges from the moment they arrive, yet John showed us time and again what a fighter he is. Our team poured their hearts into helping him grow stronger and it has been a privilege to watch him reach this milestone.”
The hospital highlighted his incredible journey on social media, and staff celebrated his milestone with a “graduation walk” featuring pom-poms, cheers and heartfelt goodbyes.
“John, we are so proud of you. You have already made your mark on the hearts of the Brandon Hospital team and we know you will continue to make a mark on the world,” the hospital wrote in a Facebook post. “Happy NICU graduation day. You did it!”
