The Triple Crown hopeful was injured in the Preakness just weeks later, leading to an outpouring of support.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Not every Kentucky Derby winner becomes a household name.

After all, there have been 151 horses to claim that title in the race’s history.

But some transcend victory, even if they do not go on to win the Triple Crown. One of those champions is Barbaro.

He captured the sport’s imagination by winning the 2006 Derby. At that point, the Triple Crown drought was 28 years long. Chris Goodlett with the Kentucky Derby Museum said racing fans embraced him as the next hope to break the streak.

“It was an impressive victory,” Goodlett said. “So the fact that he was undefeated, the fact that he won the Derby so easily, had people excited about a potential Triple Crown winner.”

But in the Preakness, he suffered an injury that ended his career. Goodlett said jockey Edgar Prado’s quick action saved Barbaro’s life. Fans followed his journey to recovery, but ultimately, veterinarians made the decision to euthanize the 2006 Derby champ months later.

Barbaro’s short career, and victory, is immortalized outside the gates of Churchill Downs.

“Pretty soon after, the plans began to have this sculpture made. It actually was unveiled here in 2009 at Churchill Downs,” Goodlett said. “It shows Barbaro all four feet off the ground. The Jacksons (owning family) wanted that sculpture to be here at the site of his greatest victory at Churchill Downs.”
