Video from social media shows a fake boulder falling off the track and bouncing toward the audience as a crew member rushes in front of it.
WASHINGTON — A Disney World employee was injured Tuesday stopping a 400-pound prop from hitting audience members during a live performance.
The incident, at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Florida, happened during the “Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular!” live show.
Video from social media shows a fake boulder falling off the track and bouncing toward the audience as a crew member rushes in front of it and puts his arms out. The boulder hits the man in the face, knocking him out of frame but deflecting the fake rock as other crew members rush to him.
“Call 9-1-1,” somebody can be heard saying on the video when they realize the situation isn’t part of the show.
Traditionally, the stunt spectacular live show includes a segment where an actor playing Indiana Jones runs down a slope ahead of a boulder, which eventually catches up and seemingly crushes the hero. In a typical show, the actor will then pop back up and continue his journey.
But the prop used for the stunt is still dangerous. Despite being made of rubber, it weighs approximately 400 pounds and moves at a high speed.
The show has had several injuries over the years. In 1990, the park was fined by OSHA after three performers were injured in separate incidents.
Another performer, shortly after, fell 20 feet onto concrete while executing a stunt, the Orlando Sentinel reported.
In a statement to USA Today, a Disney spokesperson confirmed that nobody else was injured in Tuesday’s stunt gone wrong and that the park’s safety team was reviewing the incident.
“We’re focused on supporting our cast member, who is recovering,” a Disney spokesperson told USA Today. “Safety is at the heart of what we do, and that element of the show will be modified as our safety team completes a review of what happened.”
It’s unclear exactly what kind of injury the crew member received.
Any remaining shows Tuesday were canceled, but the production reopened on New Year’s Eve as scheduled. No boulder was used during the Dec. 31 shows.
