The closure clears the way for a new land featuring attractions inspired by “Encanto,” “Indiana Jones” and other Disney properties.
WASHINGTON — Walt Disney World’s DinoLand U.S.A. has officially gone extinct.
The dinosaur-themed area at Disney’s Animal Kingdom in Orlando closed permanently on Feb. 1, ending a nearly three-decade run that began with the park’s opening in 1998.
The closure clears the way for a new land themed to the Tropical Americas, which will feature attractions inspired by “Encanto,” “Indiana Jones” and other Disney properties.
Disney first announced DinoLand U.S.A.’s closure in September as construction preparations began for the area’s overhaul. Several attractions and locations — including TriceraTop Spin, Fossil Fun Games, Chester & Hester’s Dinosaur Treasures, The Boneyard, Trilo-Bites and Dino-Bite Snacks — had already shuttered ahead of the final day.
Feb. 1 also marked the last chance for guests to experience the area’s remaining offerings: the iconic DINOSAUR ride, Dino Institute Shop, Restaurantosaurus and the Restaurantosaurus Lounge.
DINOSAUR, one of Animal Kingdom’s original opening-day attractions, debuted on April 22, 1998, under the name Countdown to Extinction, before being renamed in 2000. Drawing inspiration from Disney’s animated film “Dinosaur,” the ride sent guests hurtling through prehistoric landscapes in a “time rover” vehicle on a mission to rescue a 3.5-ton Iguanodon moments before a catastrophic asteroid strike.
The attraction was notable for its use of Disney’s enhanced motion vehicle technology, which allowed for sudden turns, drops and jolting movement. It was the second Disney ride to use the technology, following the Indiana Jones Adventure ride that opened at Disneyland in 1995.
Disney confirmed at the D23 fan convention in 2024 that DINOSAUR would be replaced by a new Indiana Jones-themed attraction as part of a complete reimagining of DinoLand U.S.A.
Disney Parks Chairman Josh D’Amaro said the new ride will feature a unique storyline rather than a replica of the Disneyland version. Details, including whether Harrison Ford will reprise his role as Indiana Jones, have not been announced.
The Tropical Americas land will also include an attraction based on “Encanto,” expanding Animal Kingdom’s footprint with stories rooted in Latin American culture.
In a 2023 interview with Entertainment Weekly, D’Amaro emphasized Disney’s commitment to large-scale park transformations, citing the company’s plan to invest $60 billion in its theme parks over the next decade.
“We’ve got so many stories to tell,” D’Amaro said. “We have so many things we want to make even better in the theme parks.”
