The monks first encountered the canine named Aloka during their Walk for Peace in India.

ATLANTA — As a group of Buddhist monks continue their pilgrimage across the country for harmony, they are joined by man’s best friend.

The dog seen with the group is named Aloka. The monks first encountered the canine during their Walk for Peace in India, when he started following them and never stopped.

Aloka was a stray who stayed near the group through bad weather and illness. Even after he was hit by a car, he continued following them on their journey.

His perseverance and loyalty are what led the monks to officially welcome him as part of their group.

Now in the United States, Aloka walks beside them on their 2,300-mile walk to D.C., which started in Texas in October. The months-long Walk for Peace is a mindful journey that focuses on compassion, kindness, and connection.

They plan to stop in Decatur on Tuesday, Dec. 30. Their first stop will be at the Porter Sandford III Performing Arts & Community Center, located at 3181 Rainbow Drive at 12 p.m. and then at the Beacon Municipal Complex, located at 105 Electric Ave for a peace gathering at 3:00 p.m.
