The national average for gas rose more than a dollar in the past month, and consumers are feeling it. Experts say these small changes can help drivers save money.
WASHINGTON — Gas prices remain elevated nationwide, with the national average hovering just below $4 per gallon. As drivers look for ways to cut costs at the pump, experts say some simple habits can make a real difference.
Here are some tips to help save gas.
Skip the ‘top-off’
Many drivers continue pumping after the nozzle clicks off, but experts say that’s unnecessary.
Patrick De Haan, a petroleum analyst with GasBuddy and AAA, told WCNC that when the pump shuts off, a tank is already about 98% or 99% full.
AAA also warns overfilling can damage a vehicle’s vapor recovery system.
Don’t worry about the day of the week
Some motorists try to fill up on certain days to avoid higher prices.
De Haan said those savings are minimal at best and advised drivers to shop around for the lowest price instead.
Seasonal demand and broader economic factors tend to have a bigger impact on gas costs than the day you refuel.
Off-brand gas is usually fine
Experts say most gasoline sold in the U.S. meets required standards, regardless of brand.
De Haan told WCNC that concerns about cheaper gas harming engines are largely unfounded in the vast majority of cases.
“At the end of the day, all gasoline is going to run just fine in your vehicle,” he said. “It’s really about the station that sells it, whether or not some of those stations may not invest as much in making sure their gasoline is not contaminated. But 99.9% of stations are selling gasoline that’s going to run just fine in your car.”
Drive smarter to save more
AAA says personal driving habits are the single biggest factor affecting fuel economy.
Drivers can improve mileage by maintaining steady speeds, avoiding hard acceleration and prolonged idling, and keeping tires properly inflated. Using cruise control on highways and planning errands to reduce extra trips can also help conserve fuel.
Removing extra items in your car can also improve mileage, as it takes more fuel to accelerate a heavier car.
In general, adopting smoother, safer driving habits may ultimately have a greater impact on fuel spending than trying to time daily price fluctuations.
