ATHENS, Ga. — Downtown Athens is usually busy on Sundays, but due to a winter storm affecting northeast Georgia this weekend, it’s much quieter than usual.

“It’s very quiet, very slow,” an Athens resident said. “It’s been very ominous, I would say.”

A slush of ice and snow coated downtown streets on Sunday afternoon, according to 11Alive’s Zach Merchant, who says the light, steady rain has helped melt what was previously ice and improved road visibility.

That’s a sign of improvement, but officials still want drivers to stay off the road because, as temperatures continue to drop into the night, the slush will freeze into ice.

The slush also underscores the importance of treating roads before winter weather. While a main road was slushy from rain, as Merchant turned onto a side street, the ice and snow were visibly thicker.

Freezing rain continues to fall in Athens, causing ice accumulation on trees, cars, and other surfaces.

A layer of ice measured on a nearby power box showed about a quarter inch had accumulated.

Emergency officials in Athens-Clarke County and Oconee County are continuously watching the conditions as precipitation continues to move toward the area.
