Full-circle moment as Atlanta Public Schools has planetarium revival in the works

ATLANTA — This is one of those full-circle moments for Atlanta, a piece of history is getting a second chance to shape the future.

Atlanta Public Schools this week announced plans to revive its historic planetarium. 

It opened in the 1950’s and for generations was a cornerstone of science learning for students of all ages, but funding shortages forced it to close in 2000. 

Now, it’s part of the APS Forward 2040 vision, and the goal is bigger than nostalgia.

They’re talking about creating a modern, hands-on STEAM hub designed to prepare students for millions of in-demand science and tech jobs. The district cites Bureau of Labor statistics showing 10 million jobs in the STEM field, with growth of a million more expected in the next decade. But by 2030, the shortage for those jobs is projected to be 1.4 million qualified workers.

APS sees that as an opportunity with this project.

“Exploring and expanding investment in spaces for community good that will serve our students and communities is a win-win. The planetarium is a unique opportunity to spark student curiosity and reimagine a space with deep significance,” Atlanta Board of Education Chair Jessica Johnson said. “With the support of our community of believers, Atlanta’s public schools will continue to educate and empower students that shape the world.”

The facility on the campus of Harper-Archer Elementary School will, leaders say, spark curiosity early, build real-world skills and give students access to opportunities that can change their future.

“This is a call to action,” Board Chair Johnson said. “It is a call to action to me and my Atlanta Board of Education Colleagues, to Dr. Johnson and our district administrators, and to our partners and supporters in the business community. In order for us to revive the planetarium and make it a state-of-the-art facility for our students and the community, we will all have to work together.”
