The sports use vastly different race formats, track sizes and strategies, with speed skating decided by time and short track unfolding in head-to-head heats.

WASHINGTON — While short track speed skating and speed skating may look similar at first glance, they are run very differently

Here’s what to know about the key differences, according to Olympic organizers.

How is short track speed skating different from speed skating?

The biggest difference between the two is how the races are run.

Speed skating, or long track, is a race against the clock. Skaters compete in pairs on a large 400-meter oval, which is the same size as an outdoor track. While two athletes skate at the same time, they aren’t directly racing each other. Medals are decided by time. Once everyone has skated, the fastest time wins.

In comparison, short track is all about head-to-head racing. Four to six skaters compete at once on a much smaller 111-meter track. Races unfold over multiple rounds, with finishing position determining who advances. Contact, falls and dramatic passes are all key elements of the sport.

Short-track skaters also race in packs, so the sport requires helmets and involves more strategy. Athletes must decide when to pass, when to draft behind competitors and when to avoid crashes. Long track is the more controlled and technical sport, with an emphasis on pacing and efficiency.

There are also physical differences. Short-track skaters often have a lower center of gravity to handle tight turns, while long-track skaters tend to be taller and benefit from powerful, extended strides.

At the Milan Cortina 2026 Olympics, long track features 14 medal events, while short track will include nine events.
