The New Black Wall Street Market opened in 2021 and was a space for black businesses to thrive in Metro Atlanta.
STONECREST, Ga. — Conflicting messages are leaving vendors at the New Black Wall Street Market uncertain about what comes next.
Management says the market will close for good on April 30. But others involved in overseeing the market dispute that, saying the closure is temporary and the space will reopen after working through ongoing issues.
That uncertainty is creating stress for business owners like Dr. Roni Shyaam, who owns Kuba Kingdom and has been part of the market since it opened.
“Without a lot of notice, I have a lot of work ahead of me,” Shyaam said.
Shyaam’s business once thrived at the market. In a 2023 interview during the market’s second year, she described strong sales and growth.
“We have made the most money that we ever had in that year here,” Shyaam said in 2023.
Now, she says business has sharply declined.
“It went from up there to waaaaaay down. There were sometimes where there were hardly 10 people in there. Sometimes there were hardly two people in there,” Shyaam said.
The slowdown is visible in her warehouse, where unsold products are stacked in large quantities—items that no longer fit in her storefront and others she has already removed.
Even after being told the closure may only be temporary, Shyaam remains skeptical and frustrated, especially about the lack of communication.
“They have not told us anything. And why would they reopen and let us pull everything out? You have labor money, that you have to pay people to pull the stuff out and then to reorganize it again,” Shyaam said.
It remains unclear when—or if—the market will reopen. However, representatives from both the City of Stonecrest and those connected to the market say they are confident it will return.
In the meantime, a farewell event is planned. The New Black Wall Street Market will host a celebration for seniors on Wednesday from 12 to 3 p.m.
