“Every time I hugged someone, I wanted to scream,” Jelly Roll said.
WASHINGTON — Rapper and country singer Jelly Roll was back on his ATV this week, revealing that he was ready to move on after a crash that landed him in the hospital with a broken collarbone.
“I just knew that if I didn’t get back on it sooner or later, I was going to just be more and more afraid of it,” Jelly Roll said in a video posted to Instagram on Sunday.
The same day, Jelly Roll’s wife, known professionally as Bunnie Xo, posted a video on her Instagram account showing the aftermath of the January crash. In the video, the 41-year-old singer can be seen lying in a hospital with a neck brace. She said her husband, whose birth name is Jason DeFord, had snapped his collarbone in half after “flipping an ATV.”
“This happened in January, worst phone call to ever get,” Bunnie Xo wrote. “But we got through it thank goodness and he healed completely.”
In the video, Bunnie Xo, whose government name is Alison DeFord, playfully mocked her husband as he posed for the camera while on the hospital bed.
“You are not gangster,” Bunnie Xo says in the video. “You think this gives you street cred?”
The show must go on
Still recovering from the crash, Jelly Roll attended the 68th Grammy Awards in Los Angeles on Feb. 1, where he walked home with three awards for Best Country Duo / Group Performance for “Amen” with Shaboozey, Best Contemporary Country Album for “Beautifully Broken” and Best Contemporary Christian Music Performance / Song for “Hard Fought Hallelujah” with Brandon Lake. But that doesn’t mean that the singer wasn’t still reeling from the backroad injury.
“Every time I hugged someone, I wanted to scream,” Jelly Roll said, reflecting on attending the Grammys with a broken collarbone. “Every time somebody squeezed me, I thought I was going to cry.”

‘He’s healed completely’
Even though the injury happened in January, the Instagram post this week had some fans of the crossover star concerned. Bunnie Xo assured well-wishers that her husband was fine.
“Guys this happened in January – read da caption,” Bunnie Xo commented on the Instagram post.
Other comments on the video of Jelly Roll in the hospital were humorous.
