Emma Elizabeth Smith stars as Catherine of Aragon in the portrayal of the history of King Henry VIII’s six wives.

ATLANTA — Emma Elizabeth Smith could sing since she could practically speak. She cultivated her love for the stage and musical theatre as she grew up in Alpharetta.

She attended Kings Ridge Christian School and then Texas State University. Before she graduated college, Smith spotted an audition notice for the tour of Six The Musical. Her hard work paid off and Smith was crowned as Catherine of Aragon.

Six The Musical tells the story of the six wives of King Henry VIII, and the show is currently playing at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta.

“It’s like the popstar version of Hamilton in a way,” Smith said. “We’re giving British history but through a Spice Girls lens. It felt like a story I really resonated with, it being all female, talking about women empowerment and also being an amazing pop concert. It was everything I wanted in a show.”

Smith said the show was cast based on each person’s best fit with each queen. She described her role of Catherine of Aragon as loyal, strong and devoted.

“Her self-worth was her number one priority,” Smith said. “She’d never let a man tell her otherwise. She was queen first and there for 24 years, was very popular amongst the people. She was very Godly and involved in the Catholic Church. But she also had devotion to herself.”

Smith thanked her friends and family, especially her parents, who she said constantly supported her, cheered her on and drove her back and forth to rehearsals and performances growing up. Now, Smith’s support system gets to cheer her on from the same seats she sat in as a kid. Smith said audience members often show up to performances dressed as the different queens from Six The Musical.

“It was so overwhelming but in the best way,” Smith said. “I’ve grown up seeing shows here at the Fox, so having the perspective being on the other side, it was really surreal. I feel like theatre is the only guaranteed live entertainment where you’re connecting with people nowadays and people are required to put their phones away, lock in and have that human connection. There’s just nothing like live theatre.”

When she’s not on stage, Smith said she loves to work out, talk to her friends, do some film edits and studio recordings. She wants to continue her career in the arts after this current run of the show.

Smith said a stop home on a lengthy tour recharges her, grounds her and reminds her to keep dreaming and being herself. She noted her training at Texas State, where she said five people have earned roles in Six The Musical.

“Having that authenticity in yourself will always be your superpower.,” Smith said. “No one else can be you, and you can’t try to be anyone else.”

Six The Musical runs through Sunday, May 3 at The Fox Theatre.
