The Tempe-based university announced this week a new master’s degree program for active military members and civilian workers focused on military strategies.

PHOENIX — Arizona State University has won a federal contract from the U.S. Department of Defense to offer a new degree program specializing in war and strategy.

The Tempe-based university announced this week that the master’s degree program for active military members and civilian workers will offer coursework in military and defense strategies.

The program will offer up to 24 degrees annually, and students must be accepted by the defense department to participate.

University officials said the coursework will allow intensive seminars, war games, and going to the site of a historical conflict.

“The new master’s in war and strategy is an exciting addition to our offerings, and demonstrates our commitment to the country we call home,” Richard Avramenko, director of the ASU School of Civic and Economic Thought and Leadership, said in a statement.

The degree program is part of the government’s Strategic Thinkers Program, which had operated out of the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies before ASU submitted a proposal.
