Jacquelynn McGuyer was rushed to the hospital over the weekend after suddenly becoming ill. Her rapid decline shocked her family.
PORTLAND, Oregon — A sophomore at George Fox University is hospitalized and fighting for her life after what her family describes as a sudden and dramatic medical emergency that began with a minor skin condition.
As of one week ago, Jacquelynn McGuyer was a healthy 20-year-old college cheerleader. Just days later, doctors were restarting her heart in the intensive care unit, her family said.
Meaghan McGuyer said she last spoke with her sister on the phone Friday. The two were discussing a skin abscess Jacquelynn had been diagnosed with before everything changed.
“The next thing I know, I wake up on Saturday at 5 a.m. to a call from my parents saying Jacquelynn is in the ICU and it’s bad, you should hurry,” Meaghan McGuyer said.
The 20-year-old was rushed to the emergency room, where she was put on a ventilator. Just hours later, her heart stopped working.
“They called a code blue and I heard my sisters name, my world stopped and I started crying,” Meaghan McGuyer explained.
Doctors were able to restart Jacquelynn McGuyer’s heart, but she underwent multiple surgeries and had devices installed to support her lungs and heart. Her rapid decline shocked her family, who said the competitive cheerleader maintains a healthy lifestyle.
Days later, her condition is now slowly improving. After doctors reduced her sedation, she began showing signs of communication.
“She was like nodding her head and giving me little smirks when I would tell her jokes, it was nice to see her be able to understand what we were saying,” her sister said.
Doctors now believe Jacquelynn McGuyer’s health scare may have been caused by Type 1 diabetes, a condition her family said had gone undiagnosed her entire life.
While the college sophomore is not out of the woods yet, her sister said the family is holding onto hope as they wait for the moment they can speak with her again.
“I think that’s what we are all waiting on. We just want to hear her talk and laugh and just be here with us,” Meaghan McGuyer said.
The family has started a GoFundMe to help with medical costs.
