
Going into the quarterfinals, the women’s team had outscored their opponents 20-1 across four games.
MILAN, Metropolitan City of Milan — The United States’ women’s hockey team kept their shutout streak during the playoff match against Team Italy at the Milan Cortina Olympic Games.
Both teams battled it out at the Milano Rho Ice Hockey Arena on Friday, resulting in Team USA defeating Team Italy 6-0.
Team USA had a power play a mere three minutes into the game. After two more penalties, one to Team USA and the other to Italy, Megan Keller scored the first goal of the game.
By the end of the first period, the Americans had 10 times more shots on the goal than the Italians.
Team USA scored another three goals, two by Kendall Coyne Schofield and one by Grace Zumwinkle, in three and a half minutes during the second period. Britta Curl-Salemme scored America’s fifth goal of the game and her first at the Olympics while her team was short-handed. USA’s Hannah Bilka scored the sixth goal of the game.
No one scored in the third period.
Team USA consistently had about 10 times more shots on the goal than Team Italy. They ended with 51 shots while Italy had 6.
Team captain Hilary Knight is still one goal away from breaking the record for most Olympic goals scored in women’s hockey.
The game came after Team USA defeated Canada, Switzerland and Finland 5-0 and Czechia 5-1 during the preliminary rounds.
Team USA is the favorite to win in women’s hockey, and their recent games only highlight why that is.
In the game against Canada, The University of Wisconsin’s Caroline Harvey had a goal and two assists, with Badger teammates Laila Edwards and Kirsten Simms also scoring. The goal was Edwards’ first in her Olympic debut. She is the first Black woman to represent the U.S. in women’s hockey.
University of Minnesota captain Abbey Murphy set up three goals.
Aerin Frankel stopped 20 shots for her third win and second shutout in her first Olympic tournament. And even 36-year-old captain Hilary Knight added an assist — the 32nd Olympic point of her career to tie Jenny Potter for most by a U.S. women’s hockey player.
The women’s team is trying to make a comeback for gold this year. In 2022, Canada narrowly defeated Team USA 3-2 to secure gold and leave Team USA with silver.
Next women’s hockey events
The women’s semifinal match starts at 10:40 a.m. ET Monday, Feb. 16. Team USA will verse Team Sweden. the bronze game will be held Thursday, Feb. 19 at 8:40 a.m. ET and the date for the game deciding silver and gold is yet to be determined.
