ACWORTH, Ga. — For many people, the great outdoors is a place to relax, recharge and reconnect with nature. But for some communities, access to and representation in outdoor spaces has not always felt welcoming. One Georgia nonprofit is working to change that.
Simone Adams said her love for nature began when she was a child exploring her backyard. Over time, that curiosity grew into a passion for hiking and camping.
“I was just curious and loved to explore, and eventually my dad introduced me to camping and hiking,” Adams said.
As an adult, Adams began hiking at Red Top Mountain State Park and along sections of the Appalachian Trail. But during those outings, she noticed something.
“I always felt like I was the only person who looked like me when I went outdoors—everything from the camp counselor, the whitewater rafting guide, the zip line instructor, the park rangers,” Adams said.
That experience inspired her to create Color My Outdoors, a nonprofit focused on introducing people of color to outdoor recreation and building confidence in nature-based activities. Through hiking trips, nature walks and workshops, the organization helps participants learn outdoor skills and feel more comfortable exploring parks and trails.
“This is part of our heritage. I think most cultures of color are the original land stewards,” Adams said. “There’s a lack of understanding and a lack of confidence, and we haven’t had the access. We haven’t been taught the skills to be outside in a safe and responsible way.”
For those new to outdoor recreation, Adams recommends starting in spaces that feel approachable and accessible. She points to places like the Silver Comet Trail or sections of the Atlanta Beltline where people can enjoy nature while still walking on paved paths.
“They’re places where you can walk through areas that feel like nature but you’re still on a paved path,” she said.
