OpenAI launches ChatGPT Health, allowing users to link medical records and apps

WASHINGTON — OpenAI has announced ChatGPT Health, a new experience designed to help users better understand and manage their health by connecting medical records and wellness apps to the chatbot.

The company said ChatGPT Health combines a user’s personal health information and ChatGPT’s tools to help them feel more informed when navigating health questions.

OpenAI emphasized that the feature is not intended for diagnosis or treatment and is meant to support, not replace, medical care.

“ChatGPT Health is another step toward turning ChatGPT into a personal super-assistant that can support you with information and tools to achieve your goals across any part of your life,” Fidji Simo, CEO of applications at OpenAI, wrote in a post.

According to the company, health is already one of the most common uses of ChatGPT, with over 230 million people globally asking health and wellness-related questions each week.

The company said ChatGPT Health was developed in close collaboration with over 260 physicians and includes added privacy protections, including purpose-built encryption and isolation for health data.

The new feature lives in a separate space within the chatbot. Any health conversations, files and connected apps are stored away from other chats. OpenAI also said information from ChatGPT Health will not be used to train its foundation models.

Users can connect their medical records and various wellness apps such as Apple Health, MyFitnessPal, Weight Watchers and Function. OpenAI has also partnered with b.well to enable secure access to health records from U.S. providers. 

Connecting apps and records requires user permission and can be removed at any time.

The feature is rolling out to a small group of early users first, with plans to expand access in the coming weeks.
