PICKENS COUNTY, Ga. — If you ever needed a reminder that it’s never too late, a 103-year-old woman just earned her high school diploma after putting her education on hold to serve during World War II.

Pickens County School District recognized Jo Edna Niblett during the Pickens High School Class of 2026’s Military Enlistee Ceremony on Apr. 29. Niblett received her honorary diploma after over eight decades and was recognized for her sacrifice, resilience, and patriotism.

Niblett worked at Bell Aircraft in Marietta as a young woman during WWII, becoming one of the nation’s “Rosie the Riveters,” welding B-29 bombers and contributing to the war effort.

She, like many women in her generation, helped shape the outcome of the war and redefined what it meant to be a woman in the workforce.

The Pickens County School District became aware of Niblett’s story more than 80 years later and invited her to attend the ceremony, where she was surprised with her diploma, quickly becoming the evening’s most celebrated guest.

“This diploma represents more than academic achievement—it represents a lifetime of service, sacrifice, and strength,” said superintendent Dr. Travis Thomas at the event. “Mrs. Niblett embodies the very best of our community and our country.”

The Military Enlistee Ceremony honors graduating seniors who have chosen to enlist in the armed forces. The district hopes Niblett’s sacrifice serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of stepping up in times of need.
