WASHINGTON — The largest “Sesame Street” digital library is now on YouTube, featuring more than 100 full episodes, all available for free on the platform.
“Watch everything from beloved, iconic episodes to recent season adventures across the Sesame Street and Sesame Street Classics channels,” Sesame Street posted on social media. “Whether you’re an old friend or a brand-new pal, we’re so excited to welcome you to our neighborhood on YouTube.”
The expanded partnership between YouTube and the Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit behind the iconic children’s show, was announced in September.
It came months after Netflix announced the iconic children’s show would be coming to the streaming platform after Warner Bros. Discovery decided not to renew its contract for new episodes of the show.
“Sunny days are here,” YouTube CEO Neal Mohan said in a statement Thursday.
Along with the older content, YouTube-specific content will be posted to the platform.
“In the past year, Sesame Street’s YouTube channels garnered more than 5B views, a 130% increase year over year,” YouTube said in a September press release. More than half of watch time already comes from connected TVs.
Sesame Workshop said in a statement that the move will help “children everywhere grow smarter, stronger and kinder, one episode at a time.”
Some beloved moments from “Sesame Street” history will be featured on YouTube, like:
- “Welcome to Sesame Street”: Watch the first-ever episode that aired in 1969, introducing favorite characters like Big Bird, Bert, Ernie, Kermit the Frog and more.
- “Snuffy is Revealed”: Big Bird finally reveals that his friend Snuffleupagus isn’t imaginary at all!
- “Mr. Rogers Visits”: It’s a beautiful day on Sesame Street when Fred Rogers comes to visit the neighborhood.
- “Maria & Luis Get Engaged”: Maria and Luis are in love and decide to get married.
- “Goodbye Mr. Hooper”: The neighbors of Sesame Street come together after the passing of their friend Mr. Hooper.
An additional 90 hours of content is available only on Netflix and Season 56 premiered in November.
When did ‘Sesame Street’ first air?
The beloved educational children’s show first aired on Nov. 10, 1969, and features Jim Henson’s Muppets. It’s one of the longest-running shows in American history and, according to Britannica, is watched by nearly half of all U.S. preschool-age children.
