Sophie Turner got a “minor injury,” prompting production for “Tomb Raider” to pause while she recovers.
WASHINGTON — Sophie Turner, the actress bringing video game character Lara Croft back to the television screen, was injured while filming. The injury prompted production of the show, which began in January, to temporarily halt, according to reports.
“Sophie Turner recently experienced a minor injury. As a precaution, production has briefly paused to allow her time to recover. We look forward to resuming production as soon as possible,” Amazon MGM Studios said in a statement to Entertainment Weekly.
No other information about the injury, how she was injured or other details have been announced at this time.
The US Sun reported she had a “pre-existing back injury” that progressed while working on set.
Prime Video previously said production got underway in Los Angeles in January this year. The studio also gave fans a first glimpse of the “Game of Thrones” star in full Lara Croft gear. In the photo, Turner is sporting the video game character’s iconic green tank, black shorts and red sunglasses.
Turner will lead Prime Video’s new TV adaptation of the popular video game franchise. The show, created by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, will also feature Sigourney Weaver, Jason Isaacs, Martin Bobb-Semple, Jack Bannon, John Heffernan, Bill Paterson, Paterson Joseph, Sasha Luss, Juliette Motamed, Celia Imrie and August Wittgenstein.
The TV series will follow the adventures of world-famous archaeologist and adventurer Lara Croft. There is no release date for the project at this time.
Turner is the newest star to take hold of the “Tomb Raider” mantle, following in the footsteps of Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander. Jolie starred in the first movie adaptation, “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider,” and its sequel, “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider — The Cradle of Life.”
Vikander played Lara Croft in the 2018 film “Tomb Raider.”
“I am thrilled beyond measure, to be playing Lara Croft. She’s such an iconic character, who means so much to so many – and I am giving everything I’ve got,” Turner said in a previous statement. “They’re massive shoes to fill, following in the steps of Angelina and Alicia with their powerhouse performances, but with Phoebe at the helm, we (and Lara) are all in very safe hands. I can’t wait for you all to see what we have cooking.”
