Spotify announces price hike for premium subscriptions

WASHINGTON — Spotify is raising its prices next month. 

The music streaming platform announced on Thursday that it would hike its prices across several tiers starting in February. The change means premium plans will go from $11.99 a month to $12.99 a month. 

For student plans, the monthly subscription will go from $5.99 to $6.99. 

Consumers on Spotify’s Duo or Family plans will see a slightly larger hike — an increase of $2 a month for those tiers. The tiers will go from $18.99 to $21.99 per month, respectively, starting next month.

It’s the first price adjustment since June 2024.

The company touted its 700 million monthly active users and its $675 million operating income in its third quarter earnings report last November. Spotify Founder and CEO Daniel Ek also said he expects further “revenue growth and profit expansion” in the future. The company is expected to release its fourth-quarter earnings in early February.

“Occasional updates to pricing across our markets reflect the value that Spotify delivers, enabling us to continue offering the best possible experience and benefit artists,” the streaming platform said in its Thursday announcement. 

The price hike also comes weeks after Spotify launched a music video feature. The update, rolled out in December 2025, allowed users to switch from a song straight into its official music video. 

Spotify said the move reflects what listeners have been asking for. In a recent survey cited by the company, more than 70% of users said more video would enhance their experience on the platform. The new feature also gave users access to a growing catalog of official music videos, including studio versions, live performances, and select covers from their favorite artists.
