The chain’s new Fresh Value Menu is Subway’s first-ever dedicated value lineup.

WASHINGTON — It’s not quite a $5 footlong, but cheap sandwiches at Subway are making a comeback.

With Americans still feeling the squeeze of years of food inflation, Subway is making a direct pitch to budget-conscious diners: 15 menu items, all under $5, available now at more than 18,000 locations nationwide.

The chain’s new Fresh Value Menu, which launched Monday, is Subway’s first-ever dedicated value lineup. It includes four new “Deli Faves” six-inch subs at $3.99, a selection of protein-packed wraps called Protein Pockets also at $3.99, and a rotating Sub of the Day priced at $4.99. For $2 more, customers can add chips and a drink to any Sub of the Day order.

Restaurant prices have outpaced grocery inflation and made diners think twice before ordering. A 2024 survey by LendingTree found that 78 percent of consumers now consider fast food a luxury purchase.

Value is the word of the year across virtually every major fast food chain in 2026, with aggressive meal deals popping up left and right — Wendy’s, Taco Bell, KFC and McDonald’s have all recently added new cheaper options or launched expanded value menus.

The Deli Faves lineup headlines the new menu with four classic-style subs: the BLT, the Cold Cut Combo and two new additions, a Spicy Pepperoni and a Ham & Salami. The Protein Pockets — a wrap format that debuted earlier this year — come in four varieties, including a Baja Chicken and a Turkey Ham, each with more than 20 grams of protein. The Sub of the Day rotates daily through staples like Meatball Marinara on Mondays and Spicy Italian on Sundays.

“Your wallet and stomach deserve freshly-baked bread, real protein and the perfect combination of sauces and hand-chopped veggies — all for under $5,” said Dave Skena, Subway’s chief marketing officer for North America.

The Fresh Value Menu is available at participating U.S. restaurants, with prices higher in California, Washington, Alaska and Hawaii. Items can be found on the Subway app or at Subway.com, or in a new yellow section on in-store menu boards.
