A deepening low will draw in polar air for most of the eastern United States late this week.
A powerful surge of Arctic air is scheduled to spill southward into the Midwest and much of the eastern United States over the next 10 days. Prepare for round after round!
This blast of polar air will reinforce winter’s grip, with bitter conditions expanding from the Plains and Great Lakes into the Ohio Valley, Appalachians, and eventually the East Coast.
As the Arctic air mass deepens, overnight lows are expected to plunge into the teens and single digits across the Midwest and interior Northeast, with some rural and northern locations dipping even lower. The first round of arctic air pushes south through the Great Lakes Tuesday night.
The second round will arrive early this weekend where regional wind chills will drop below zero.
Based on the latest forecast guidance, the second round will be slightly stronger for the Midwest region of the United States. Keep in mind, these are forecast air temperatures, when you factor in high winds, ‘feels-like’ temperatures will be well below.
Gusts approaching 40 mph may create dangerous wind chill values, increasing the risk of frostbite for anyone exposed for prolonged periods.
In addition to the cold wind, the Northeast is bracing for significant winter weather as the frigid air interacts with moisture moving through the region. Forecast snow totals could exceed a foot in some areas, particularly across higher elevations, the northern Great Lakes and parts of of New England . Blowing and drifting snow, combined with reduced visibility from strong winds, may lead to hazardous travel conditions.
Pockets of heavy snowfall may extend south into the Tennessee River Valley.
Residents across the Midwest and East are urged to prepare now, secure loose outdoor items, and stay up to date with local meteorologists and daily weather forecasts as this intense stretch of winter weather unfolds.
