A 24‑year‑old from East Texas is building a full log cabin by hand, inspired the iconic imagery of the American frontier.

TEXAS, USA — On a stretch of wooded land east of Dallas, Texas, 24-year-old Pearson Caldwell is building a log cabin with his bare hands and documenting his journey along the way.

Caldwell, who grew up on 160 acres, spent a majority of his childhood outdoors.

“I was just always spending time in the woods, playing, building things, just doing stuff outdoors,” Caldwell said.

Now a student at Texas Tech University, Caldwell is pursuing a degree in general business while balancing his ambitious personal project of constructing a full-scale log cabin entirely by hand using timber harvested from his family’s land.

“This log cabin is a frontier style log cabin, and it’s like a prime example of what the pioneers were building, because they’re building with what they had,” Caldwell said.

The project that began in late 2023, has drawn a massive following online. Nearly one million viewers watching his progress through short-form videos documenting each step on TikTok. Using minimal tools and traditional techniques, Caldwell lifts logs weighing more than 2,000 pounds with improvised mechanical systems, often working alone.

“Very reminiscent of early America,” Caldwell said.

Caldwell cites the legacy of pioneers and figures like the Founding Fathers as inspiration.

“I want to experience how they would have done it back in the day, how our forefathers would have built a log cabin,” Caldwell said. “That’s huge to me, like they built this country.”

The cabin itself is distinctly East Texan, constructed from native materials like eastern red cedar and post oak. Caldwell said that the imperfections of the trees such as being crooked and dense add to the challenge and authenticity.

“There’s tons of eastern red cedar. There’s going to be post oak incorporated into the construction as well,” Caldwell said. “There’s just a sense of East Texas pride when building this log cabin, because you can’t really do this in any other part of Texas.”

Despite the physical demands and frequent setbacks, Caldwell said quitting has never been an option.

“If I want something done, it’s going to be done, I’m going to find a way to do it,” Caldwell said. “I really just get fired up when stuff fails. That gets me through the toughest stuff.”

His journey has extended beyond his project and home in Texas. In 2025, Caldwell landed on the survival television series “Naked and Afraid,” where he served as a shelter builder in Thailand. He said the experience tested his endurance and reinforced his belief in pushing personal limits.

Looking ahead, Caldwell plans to attend Officer Candidates School with the United States Marine Corps, aiming to become an officer after graduation.

“A lot of people dream or talk about doing something, but they don’t really take action. I want more people to quit thinking or overthinking and really just take action,” Caldwell said.

Caldwell said the cabin is about half complete and he hopes to finish it within the next year.

As America marks 250 years, this young East Texan is taking on a massive project to show others it can be done. His story is part of out America 250: Red, White & You series highlighting the people helping shape the next chapter of our country.
