The Storybook Dog Bus turns heads, helps rescue dogs find fur-ever homes

CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ga. — An eye-catching bus rolling through Cherokee County is turning heads, going viral online, and helping shelter dogs find second chances along the way.

It is called the Storybook Dog Bus, and for many in the community, spotting the colorful vehicle packed with excited pups has become a moment of unexpected joy.

Dogs bark and play as they hop aboard, tails wagging before the bus even pulls away. For founder Erin Bankston, every ride is about more than fun. It is about connection, visibility, and giving dogs an opportunity to be seen.

“It’s like a school,” Bankston said. “I’m the pack leader. You have to tell them no, sit down, be quiet. It really is like a school, just with a bunch of rowdy dogs.”

Bankston began driving the bus in April and already has a waiting list. She now runs eight routes across the county, carefully pairing dogs based on size and temperament to ensure every ride is safe and enjoyable.

“There’s several of them with strong personalities,” she said with a laugh. “The little dogs have way more attitude than the big dogs.”

The bus quickly gained a following online, where videos of smiling dogs looking out the windows drew thousands of views. In downtown Woodstock, the bus often attracts crowds.

“You drive through downtown Woodstock, and it’s like the ‘pupperazzi,'” Bankston said. “We’ll pull up at a red light and people are just in awe, yelling hey, hey. I’ve had people chase me down just so they can say hello to the dogs.”

For dog owners like Robyn Hensley, whose dog Reya rides the bus, the experience has been just as meaningful for pet parents as it is for the pups.

“She’s so good with the dogs,” Hensley said. “I feel super blessed to have her. Reya adores her. When she sees that bus coming, she’s out the door. She loves it so much.”

That viral attention is now helping shelter animals find homes.

Bankston regularly brings rescue dogs along for rides, introducing them to the community in a fun, relaxed environment where potential adopters can see their personalities shine.

“Just to try a different angle of getting them seen and adopted quicker,” she said. “We’ll get a pup cup, take a lot of videos, because that is the purpose.”

One recent rescue, a small dog named Georgia, was saved after Bankston shared her story online.

“The community banded together completely,” Bankston said. “They covered her vet bills within an hour of me posting about her. She’s set for life.”

Georgia now rides the bus regularly, helping showcase the transformation many rescue dogs experience once they are safe and cared for.

“Seeing the 180 these dogs can do, going from super scared of everything to now feeling confident and happy, you can see it in their eyes,” Bankston said. “They’re just so grateful and happy that they got another chance at life.”

For the dogs climbing aboard each day, the Storybook Dog Bus is more than a ride around town. It is a rolling introduction to the families who may one day take them home, one joyful stop at a time.
