The two boys, a second-grader and a fifth-grader, were sent to an immigration detention center last week with their mother.
COLUMBIA HEIGHTS, Minn. — Two elementary school students and their mother have returned to Minnesota after being sent to an immigration detention center last week in Texas, according to school officials.
Columbia Heights Public Schools sent out a letter to school families and faculty informing them that two Valley View Elementary students — a second-grader and a fifth-grader — were released and flown back to Minnesota with their mother Wednesday.
In a letter, the district said, “Mother and sons are in good health and eager to resume the boys’ schooling.”
According to the school district, the mother was detained on Thursday, Jan. 29, and asked that her two children be brought with her. The students were brought to the mother, then were processed for detention.
According to a letter sent by the district, the two boys and their mother were flown to Texas that afternoon and placed in an immigration detention center. The district says that while they were at the detention center, the boys recognized another student from their school – a fifth-grade girl – in the cafeteria.
The school says they haven’t heard from that fifth-grade girl, her mother or her stepfather since Jan. 9. The district says they have lost contact with other students, who may also be at the detention center.
“We are committed to bringing back all of our students who are in detention facilities and will continue to advocate for all children being released from detention,” the letter reads. “We are very concerned about the health and well-being of these children and families. We seek the release of all children and unjustly detained parents from detention centers across our country. We seek a diplomatic and peaceful solution to end this terror that the enhanced immigration enforcement is causing in our community, our state and our country.”
The boys’ return comes just days after 5-year-old Liam Ramos returned to Minnesota with his father after spending time at the same detention facility.
