The season finale of the long-running medical drama is set to air May 7.

LOS ANGELES — Two of “Grey’s Anatomy’s” most enduring cast members are leaving the long-running ABC medical drama.

Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver, who portray Dr. Owen Hunt and Dr. Teddy Altman, respectively, will depart the series following the Season 22 finale, set to air May 7.

The exits are a creative decision, sources told Variety, though the departures also come as the show faces reported budget pressures ahead of a potential Season 23 renewal.

McKidd, a Scottish actor who previously appeared in the 1996 film “Trainspotting” and HBO’s “Rome,” joined “Grey’s Anatomy” in Season 5 in 2008. Raver originally appeared in Seasons 6 through 8, from 2009 to 2012, then returned briefly in 2017 and rejoined as a series regular in Season 15 in 2018.

Their characters have a long-standing on-again, off-again relationship — beginning as best friends from their time in the Army, eventually leading to a marriage in Season 18 and two children together. The couple finalized a divorce at the start of the current season.

Series creator Shonda Rhimes indicated the characters will be given a proper send-off.

“It is both bittersweet and joyful to give this couple the happy ending their story deserves,” Rhimes said in a statement. “Kevin and Kim bring extraordinary talent, nuance and heart to their roles as Owen and Teddy. Their contributions leave an indelible mark on ‘Grey’s Anatomy,’ both in front of and behind the camera.”

McKidd, who has also become one of the show’s most prolific directors, has helmed 48 episodes since his directorial debut in Season 7 and will direct the Season 22 finale — his own farewell episode. Raver has directed three episodes.

In a statement, McKidd said the show had shaped him both creatively and personally.

“Playing Dr. Owen Hunt and directing on the show have both shaped me enormously, and I’ve had the privilege of working with an extraordinary group of people throughout that time,” he said. “I’m particularly thankful to Shonda Rhimes for creating Owen, and for the encouragement she gave me as I stepped into directing.”

Raver reflected warmly on her tenure.

“Playing Dr. Teddy Altman will always hold a dear and special place in my heart,” she said, adding that she was grateful to executive producing director Debbie Allen, “who not only mentored me but welcomed me into the director’s chair.”

The ABC drama’s official X account confirmed the departures Wednesday morning, writing: “Thank you, Kim and Kevin. There are no words for the gratitude we have for everything you brought to Grey’s Anatomy.”

Showrunner Meg Marinis left the door open for future appearances.

“While their story is coming to a close, this is never truly a goodbye,” Marinis said. “We are endlessly grateful for the years, the artistry and the memories they’ve given to the show and we look forward to cheering them on in whatever comes next.”

With the departures, only three original cast members remain: Ellen Pompeo, who now appears part-time; Chandra Wilson; and James Pickens Jr.

“Grey’s Anatomy” has yet to be officially renewed for a 23rd season, though a renewal is expected.
