
Some areas are offering resources to make sure people can stay warm as the temps drop.
DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — Some areas are opening warming centers as the cold weather moves in this week. Some parts of north Georgia saw snow flurries on Wednesday. The accumulations were light and confined to higher elevations on the mountains.
But the cold temperatures will linger. Some areas are offering resources to make sure people can stay warm as the temps drop.
City of Atlanta
Atlanta officials will have three nights where the warming centers will be open.
- Wednesday, Jan.14 at 8 p.m. – Thursday, Jan. 15 at 11 a.m.
- Thursday, Jan. 15 at 8 p.m. – Friday, Jan. 16 at 11 a.m.
- Friday, Jan. 16 at t 8 p.m. – Saturday, Jan. 17 at 9 a.m.
- Central Park Recreation Center (400 Merritts Ave NE, Atlanta 30308)
- Selena S. Butler Park and Recreation Center (98 William Holmes Borders Dr. NE, Atlanta, GA 30312) for women and children only
A third warming center will open at Old Adamsville Recreation Center at 3404 Delmar Ln NW, Atlanta, GA 30331 for overflow.
City officials said transportation will be provided each night at 8 p.m. from the Gateway Center with return transportation provided by Fulton County from the Gateway Center when the warming center closes. Activation times are subject to change based on the forecast.
DeKalb County
DeKalb County said it would also open warming centers beginning at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 14 and they’ll continue to be open through Friday. Jan. 16.
That includes two 24-hour activations for Jan. 15-16:
- Frontline Response International, 2585 Gresham Rd SE, Atlanta
- Exchange Park Intergenerational Center, 2771 Columbia Dr, Decatur
And there are four overnight locations for Jan. 14-16:
- Exchange Park Intergenerational Center, 2771 Columbia Dr., Decatur
- Frontline Response International, 2585 Gresham Rd SE, Atlanta
- St. Vincent de Paul, 2050-C Chamblee Tucker Rd, Chamblee
- Mason Mill Recreation Center, 1340 McConnell Dr, Decatur
All transportation routes originate from Frontline Response Headquarters (2585 Gresham Rd SE, Atlanta) and are scheduled for initial pickups to be completed by 7:30 p.m. Following the initial routes, final sweeps will continue from 7:30 p.m. until 10 p.m., ending promptly at 10 p.m.
